Our Mission

Greater Deliverance Church of God in Christ's mission is to preach, teach, and promote the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ through the Word of God and through committed leadership to save the lost and encourage and strengthen the saved to live a victorious life through Jesus Christ. Our purpose is to be a harbor for the soul of man, where love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance can be found. To keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace until Jesus comes. To be effective witnesses for Christ among family, friends, neighbors and the world, we will carry out this mission through In-reach and Out-reach, which will minister to the whole man; body, soul, and spirit. We will use our resources, both natural and spiritual, to effectively carry out this mission. All programs, services and ministries will work out of love and integrity with a Godly purpose and motivation. In doing so, we will carry out the commission and will of God.

Statement of Faith - What We Believe
  • WE believe the Bible to be the inspired and only infallible written Word of God.
  • WE believe that there is One God, eternally existent in three Persons;
  • God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
  • WE believe in the Blessed Hope, which is the rapture of the Church of God, which is in Christ at His return.
  • WE believe that the only means of being cleansed from sin, is through repentance, faith in the precious Blood of Jesus Christ and being baptized in water.
  • WE believe that regeneration by the Holy Ghost is absolutely essential for personal salvation.
  • WE believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the Cross, provides healing for the human body in answer to believing in prayer.
  • WE believe that the baptism in the Holy Ghost, according to Acts 2:4, is given to believers who asks for it.
  • WE believe in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling, the Christian is enabled to live a Holy and separated life in this present world, Amen.

Our History

The Churches of God in Christ, Inc. originally began in Lexington, Mississippi in 1897 by its founder, The Late Bishop Charles Harrison Mason. The World Headquarters today is located at 272 South Main Street in Memphis, Tennessee. The origin of Greater Deliverance Church of God in Christ began in 1918. After the Late Bishop C. H. Mason sent Elder Battles to Forest, Mississippi to began a Church of God in Christ. Greater Deliverance formerly named "Forest Church of God in Christ" had its humble beginning in a "Jook Joint" donated for part-time usage by one of the well worshippers of the community. The church moved to its new location in 1919 under the leadership of Elder Battles. The church continued to worship and praise God under the leadership of Elder Battles. However, the community complained about the noisy church services until, one day Sheriff Mark Cross threatened to hang Elder Battles if he didn't leave town. One of the saints sneaked him to Lake, Mississippi where he left town on a bus. Elder Battles relocated and was replaced by Elder Belt. Elder Gardner who served for a short time later replaced Elder Belt. Then, Elder Brown served the church for a period of time. After having our heritage enriched by such historical pioneers, The Lord favored us with yet another great pioneer, Elder Roy Murray who served the church for over 40 years. Under Elder Roy Murray's leadership the church's name was changed from "Forest Church of God in Christ" to "Murray Temple Church of God in Christ". Elder Roy Murray guided many souls to Christ through door to door witnessing and teaching the word of God. Many ministers and missionaries accepted their calling under his leadership. Also, under Elder Roy Murray leadership, a new sanctuary and dining facility was built. These women impacted the lives of many people who still speak of their loyalty and diligent service to the church. Some of the faithful deacons who pioneered the way were: Robert Ware, Jonas Crudup, Deacon Rankin, Aaron Lyles, Shug Ware and Edmond Harvey.

After serving as overseer for nearly a year, Elder Daniel Littleton was appointed pastor of Murray Temple, February 4th, 1997 of which the named was changed through much prayer and spiritual guidance to Greater Deliverance Church of God in Christ, ...and greater works than these shall he do. St. John 14:12. Pastor Daniel Littleton reorganized the church to enhance its administration. Thereby, positioning the church focus to encompass the needs of its members; the accountability of its stewardship; establish new auxiliaries; monthly newsletter "Bread of Heaven"; GDC Community OutReach, Inc "a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization", and GDC Rescue Squad " a witnessing ministry". Under the leadership of Elder Daniel Littleton, souls have been added to the church and baptized with the Holy Ghost. Greater Deliverance membership growth, dedication and prayers of its members coupled with the leadership of Pastor Littleton lead the church to commence its building project with ground breaking which was held, August 29, 1999.

In July of 2001, Elder Littleton continued to lead the church in renovating the old sanctuary to accommodate six classrooms, one multipurpose room, fellowship hall and commercial kitchen. The old sanctuary captures the history of our church, which goes back to 1920. The church ground includes a new church sign and two 30 ft. flagpoles (American flag & COGIC flag).

On November 25, 2001, the newly renovated sanctuary was dedicated in honor of Elder Roy T. Murray and named the "Elder Roy T. Murray Christian Education Complex." Shortly thereafter, the fellowship hall was dedicated in honor of Mother Mattie Helen Watts and named the "Mattie Helen Watts Fellowship Hall."
